When it comes to motorcycles, the surge in purchases of pocket rocket mini bikes has soared. These mini bikes, or pocket rockets, came to be available on the market a couple of years ago. These bikes are miniature versions of the full sized racing bikes and choppers that have been in use for decades. They look almost identical to many popular full sized motorcycles, but are usually less than 2 feet high. Many are equipped with powerful gas powered motors, some of which are able to achieve speeds of over 40 miles an hour. The ergonomics of a mini bike is different than that of a full sized motorcycle, and the rider sits very low to the ground, scrunched up in almost a crouch in order to get their hands to the grips and the feet off the ground.

Local and Federal Regulations

Most mini motorcycles do not meet the U.S. Department of Transportation’s vehicle design safety and equipment requirements which dictate that the vehicle have safety features, such as head and tail lights, turn signals, mirrors and horns that are equipped standard on any regular use vehicle. As most states laws are adopted from the federal laws, many state’s laws mirror the federal regulation as to what is considered a road worthy vehicle. Because of this, the mini bike does not qualify as a valid vehicle that is legal to operate on public roads. There are several states that specifically dictate that these types of bikes are not allowed on the public roadways, sidewalks, or city trails.

Where to Ride

The question that first comes to mind is, if not on public roadways, then where can they be ridden? Generally speaking (and again this is subject to local state laws), mini bikes were originally intended to be driven on private land, and on offroad riding trails. While their design may be contrary to this rule, violation of the law can result in pretty hefty fines. For example, in Oregon, one of the charges that can be applied results in a fine of $360. In many states, registering the bike is mandatory, regardless of it’s use.

Safety on a Mini Bike

Safety is of utmost concern when it comes to any motor vehicle, but particularly to motorcycles. The mini bike is no exception. While a mini version of a motorcycle, it is capable of achieving speeds that are comparable to other vehicles on the road. Whether you are on a mini bike or a full sized one, hitting the ground at forty miles and hour is going to do some damage, particularly if the safety equipment (such as an approved helmet) is not in employ. Also, because the balance is different, and the body is so much closer to the ground, protective clothing and eye protection could be invaluable.

Q: A friend of mine just bought a mini-motorcycle, and I was thinking about buying one too. What are the laws about riding them on the street?

A: Mini-motorcycles, or “pocket bikes,” are becoming increasingly popular. You may have recently seen someone riding one down your street, but are they legal to ride? These bikes are classified as motorcycles. However, most are not manufactured to comply with the laws that allow them to be used safely on public roadways. They also cannot be registered as a legal motor vehicle. Accordingly, the locations where they may be legally ridden are very limited. Most retailers don’t share this information with you, but that’s no excuse for being uninformed.

Vehicle Code Section 473 defines a pocket bike as follows:

“A pocket bike is a two-wheeled motorized device that has a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and that is not designed or manufactured for highway use. Pocket bike does not include an off-highway motorcycle, as defined in Section 436.”

Additionally, section 21720 has been added to the Vehicle Code that now makes operating a pocket bike illegal on the following:

“A pocket bike shall not be operated on a sidewalk, roadway or any other part of a highway or on a bikeway, bicycle path or trail, equestrian trail, hiking or recreational trail or on public lands open to off-highway motor vehicle use.”

These rules pertain to both electric and gasoline powered mini-motorcycles:

• Mini-motorcycles may be ridden on private property, but only with the owner’s permission.

• Anyone riding a mini-motorcycle on a public street or other public place may be issued a citation, and the mini-motorcycle may be impounded.

Two other popular transportation devices are motorized skateboards and motorized scooters. Here are some rules people may be concerned about when operating them:

Motorized scooter

• Driver must be at least 16 years old.

• A Class C driver’s license or driver’s permit is required.

• A motorized scooter shall at all times be equipped with a muffler.

• Speed limit is 15 mph.

• Driver must wear a bicycle helmet.

• Operation permitted on a bicycle path, trail or bikeway, unless there is a local ordinance prohibiting it.

• Motorized scooters may be ridden on private property, but only with the owner’s permission.

• On the roadway with a posted speed limit of greater than 25 mph, driver must operate in Class II bicycle lane.

• On roads with a posted speed limit of 25 mph or less, riding in a bicycle lane is not required.

• Operator shall ride as close to the right curb as possible, except to pass or turn left

Motorized skateboard

• Operation permitted on private property only, with the permission of the owner.

• Illegal on highways, sidewalks, bikeways and hiking or recreational trails.

There are those among us who collect big toys not just for the sake of displaying them, but also of enjoying them to the fullest. Pocket bikes, for example, are there to be ridden and seen in public in, and customizing pocket bikes is a way to show the world that you know your stuff. For the true pocket bike enthusiast, only the possession of mini chopper bikes can provide the genuine badge of creativity and uniqueness.

Mini chopper bikes are essentially custom-made pocket bikes. You can order them from reliable manufacturers of pocket bikes of known models, such as Harley-Davidson models. Alternatively, you could look overseas for more affordable, yet no less stylish, models. China is considered the headquarters of affordable pocket bike models, custom or regular… but other manufacturing destinations, such as India, are fast catching up.

Back in the post-World War II United States, motorcycle enthusiasts started taking out parts of their bikes that they considered too ugly, too bulky, or just not functional enough. They modified their bikes to suit their tastes, chopping out the parts that they felt were excessive; hence the term “chopper” bikes. Such bikes are often streamlined for aesthetic purposes, but serious racers also do it for a boost in speed.

Chopper bikes can be easily spotted on sight. A trained eye will note their lack of distinctive motorcycle parts, such as turn indicators, fenders and yes, even front brakes. But even the untrained eye can spot a chopper bike, because many of them have the bulky spring-suspended saddle removed, which means the seat is much closer to the ground than regular bikes. Removing the saddle lessens the bike’s weight, and optimizes the bike for racing. For this reason, chopper bikes are especially useful to dirt track racers.

The act of “chopping” does not only involve cropping out the unwanted parts of a motorcycle – some reposition the parts in order to create a custom look. Sometimes, bike enthusiasts do this themselves, but many find there are more advantages to letting experts handle the work. The most famous chopper bike shop in the world is said to be the one that is also the first: Wild Child’s Custom Shop of Kansas City, Missouri, owned by James “Wild Child” Greene.

Mini chopper bikes follow the tradition set forth by regular chopper bikes, carrying the unique and unusual freedom of style and movement on to this new generation.

Don’t let the excitement of your new purchase overwhelm your good sense. A new pocket bike must be broken in correctly if you want the bike to function correctly. If you do not take the proper steps, you will dramatically decrease your engine’s life. Opinions vary significantly on the correct way to break in a bike. We will discuss two widespread methods to break a pocket bike in. The most common method is often called “heat cycling.” Heat cycling means you run the engine at idle or barely above idle for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. After this time the engine will be right below the normal operating temperature. Then you turn the engine off and let the bike cool down. Once the engine is cool, you turn the bike on for another 10 minutes and then shut it down again. Do this process for a total of three to four times. When you have finished this process, run the bike at an easy pace for about 1 full tank of gas. Don’t put stress on the engine and avoid high RPM. When you have run through the tank of gas, your bike is ready to go and can be used at normal speeds.

The second method, called “racing break in” is less commonly used, though it is more fun. First, warm the engine for 5 minutes by letting it idle on the stand. Slowly bring the throttle up to figure out where the clutch engages. This way you can avoid getting ejected by applying too much throttle when riding. Then you hit the track. Take the first lap slowly to warm up the tires. On the second lap you can hit the gas and ride for 10 to 15 minutes. By accelerating, decelerating and hitting varying RPMS you will break in the engine. Remember to make sure that the engine has been sufficiently warmed up. Although you don’t have to ride the bike too hard, you also shouldn’t ride so slowly that the clutch never completely engages or you will burn out the clutch. You will be able to tell when the clutch is fully engaged by the sound of your motor and the feeling of the bike. It may be necessary to adjust the clutch to the rider’s weight.

When you are breaking your bike in, your oil and gas mixture will be slightly different than during normal riding. Some experts say that it is best to use a richer mixture of oil (40 parts gas to 1 one part oil) during break in instead of the standard ratio of 50 to 1, while others will say you should always stick with the normal mixture. Read your instruction manual to see what the manufacturer recommends. During break in you should use non-synthetic oil. This helps the piston ring to seat fully. After the first gallon of gas, you should use full or semi-synthetic oil.

After your first ride look the bike over for any loosened fasteners. You should also periodically check your spark plug to verify that you are using the correct fuel mixture. If your ratio is correct the plug’s insulator will be a medium tan-ish color. However, if you see that your plug is white-ish or grey than you know that your engine is running lean.

A 18 to 30 hp Briggs V-Twin is very good for a well-designed mini-helicopter, but unless his great-daughter is old enough to have a license, is probably a bit more by a mini-moto. For a child, I suggest a 4.3 cylinder adapted horses about 30 miles per hour. Tecumseh makes engines only for the purpose. Indeed, many fans are Cushman Briggs V-Twin, and vocational training units make the Cushman Eagle scooter. Some reach a maximum speed of 100 mph.

The best way to ruin a good ride on your pocket bike is to get a flat tire. While they don’t happen often, when you do get a flat, it can be a pain to drag the bike back home. Fortunately, with a few tools and a little pocket bike knowledge, you can be back out on the pavement in no time by changing your own tire.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • New inner tube
  • Tire lever
  • Basic tool set
  • Air compressor or hand-pump
  1. Step 1

Set your pocket bike up on its kickstand so that the wheel with the flat tire is suspended off the ground. If your pocket bike doesn’t have a kickstand (some don’t), carefully flip the bike upside down onto its handlebars and seat.

  2. Step 2

Use a socket or combination wrench to loosen and remove the main axle bolt of the wheel with the flat tire. Pull the wheel out of the forks or swing arm. Use a tire lever to separate the old tire and tube from the rim and set them both aside The tube can be disposed of.

  3. Step 3

Set one bead (or one side) of the tire back onto the rim, so that one still remains unattached. If you are fixing a flat on the rear wheel, pay special attention to the directional markers on the tire and make sure you mount it facing the correct direction.

  4. Step 4

Use a hand pump or air compressor to inflate the new inner tube slightly. This will help you avoid pinch flats when mounting the second tire bead. Set the valve stem of the tube through the valve hole in the rim and push the rest of the inner tube into the tire.

  5. Step 5

Mount the second tire bead on the rim. If at any point the tire becomes too difficult to push onto the rim, use a tire lever to wedge it into place carefully. Use a hand pump or air compressor to fill the tire to the recommended pressure (marked in bold type on the tire sidewall).

  6. Step 6

Set the wheel in place and use a socket or combination wrench to reinstall and tighten the main axle bolt. Be sure the axle is tight, not snug, or it may come loose while riding causing a crash and possible injury.
